Steven Mkumba was born in a small village with Makonde heritage, a community known for its rich cultural and artistic traditions, particularly wood carvings. Mkumba’s early exposure to this artistic environment played a significant role in shaping his creative instincts from a young age.

After completing his primary education, Mkumba moved to Dar es Salaam where he apprenticed under Salum Mussa, a renowned Tingatinga artist. Under Mussa’s mentorship, Mkumba honed his skills, perfecting the techniques and nuances of the Tingatinga style. His early works are marked by a keen attention to detail and vibrant palette, traits that would become hallmarks of his artistic identity.

Over the years, Mkumba has emerged as one of the most prominent artists of the second generation of Tingatinga painters. Beyond his portrayals of African wildlife, he has mastered a wide range of motifs, including intricate depictions of village life.

In the autumn of 2010, he participated in an exhibition in Fukuoka, Japan, where his work was met with great acclaim. The success of this exhibition marked a significant milestone in Mkumba’s career, opening doors to further international exhibitions and collaborations. His work has since been featured in galleries and museums around the world.
