Kizito Fred Kakinda was a Ugandan artist and academic born in Buddu, in the Masaka District of Uganda. He obtained a first-class BA in Fine Art from the Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts at Makerere University in 1994, followed by an MA in Fine Art in 1999.
Figuration and abstraction are prominent features of Kakinda’s vibrant art practice. Kakinda often incorporated decorative elements in his paintings and depicted figures in traditional attire, performing cultural or spiritual rituals.
Kakinda was a founding member of the Uganda Art Consortium and a founder of Let Art Talk Foundation, both organisations that provide art therapy programs for HIV-Aids patients and children in Uganda. Before his passing in 2022, Kizito Fred Kakinda was a lecturer in the Department of Visual Communication, Design and Multimedia at the Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Art at Makerere University. Alongside his work as a university professor, Kakinda was committed to assisting young artists with training, sourcing materials and obtaining studio spaces.
Kakinda’s art has been exhibited in Uganda, Europe and the United States of America.
