Modern and Contemporary
Art Auction East Africa 2020

Radisson Blu Hotel, Nairobi

6 March 2020 · 70 lots

The 7th Modern and Contemporary Art Auction East Africa was the largest to date, with 70 lots from eight countries, including three charity lots. It offered important secondary-market modern art dating back to 1975 alongside exciting contemporary work from Kenya, Uganda and Egypt.

The sale also included more sculpture than any previous edition. Of the 70 lots offered, 52 sold — a sell-through rate of 74% — with total sales of KES 23,229,270.

The three highest prices were Yony Waite's Behind Lukenya Mountains (Lot 56) at KES 1,350,100, Edward Saidi Tingatinga's Untitled (Beautiful Bird in Tree), 1971 (Lot 32), at KES 1,291,400, and Peterson Kamwathi's Untitled Study (Lot 7) at KES 1,232,700.

Artist focus: Peterson Kamwathi. The Kenyan artist's Untitled Study (Lot 7) was among the top results of the sale and one of the strongest showings for a living contemporary artist in the auction's history, confirming his standing as the region's leading contemporary name.
